Cards, Cars, and Currency

OVERVIEW

Teach credit cards, debit cards, and car loans with the “Cards, Cars, and Currency” curriculum unit. These lessons challenge students to become involved in three specific areas of personal finance: credit cards, debit cards and purchasing a car. The activities address problem-solving, critical-thinking and higher levels of learning, using real-world scenarios.

Grade Level

Lesson 1: Keep the Currency

Students learn about the importance of financial literacy by playing a game which tests their understanding of credit cards, debit cards and purchasing a car. This game serves as a pretest for subsequent lessons in this curriculum

Lesson 2: Credit Cards - A Package Deal

In this lesson, students learn about credit card usage and credit card consumer protection laws through discussion, computation exercises, survey, and debate.

Lesson 3: Banking on Debit Cards

In this lesson, students will assess the advantages and disadvantages of using credit cards and debit cards through a series of activities including calculating costs of using a debit card irresponsibly and a survey about debit card usage in their area.

Lesson 4: The Car Deal Package

In this lesson, students learn about the decisions involved in purchasing a car using examples of three types of cars as a reference—an economy car, a moderately priced car and a luxury car. They complete a series of assignments by evaluating each choice by three criteria--- the income test, the down-payment option and the time option—to learn how to make an informed decision.

In this lesson, student assess their financial literacy skills with a post-test applying to the entire curriculum
