New Reading Resource: When a Penny Costs More Than a Penny

An image of a penny for the May 2026 edition of Page One Economics

It costs a pretty penny to make a penny.  With rising production costs and declining use, the U.S. government ended its 232-year run of producing the one cent coin.  Existing pennies will remain as legal tender, but stores and consumers are already preparing to round cash purchases to the nearest nickel.  Have students make "cents" of the world around them and draw connections to basic economic concepts like opportunity cost and inflation with this month's edition of Page One Economics®.

By creating a free account on fre.org, you can be easily assigned to your students using Canvas, Google Classroom, Schoology, Blackboard, and D2L Brightspace. The assignment contains a self-grading, multiple-choice assessment for the convenience of both teachers and students. Our tutorial page will help you get started.
