FRED the Frugal Eagle

Flying Mascot Federal Reserve Education

Before he was a mascot, Fred was just a flash of feathers with a flair for the dramatic. He lived high atop Mount Clearance, a glittering peak made entirely of coupon books, penny jars, and slightly used gift wrap, where he spent his days dreaming of a noble life of frugality while secretly indulging in absurdly frivolous habits. Fred wanted to be the wisest bird in the sky. He practiced saying things like, “A prudent purchase is a powerful purchase!” and “Waste not, want not!” but then he’d immediately blow his whole nest budget on velvet throw pillows, novelty sunglasses, and imported worms with artisanal labels.

The turning point came during the Great Glitter Purchasing Incident of ’09. Fred had ordered 47 sequined banners for his nest “because they were on sale,” only to discover they were so shiny they attracted every magpie in the county. In the chaos, Fred found himself face-to-face with a tiny old turtle named Penny, who asked, “Why do you keep buying shiny nonsense if you want to live simply?” Fred, covered in glitter and regret, whispered, “Because I have the soul of a bargain hunter and the taste of a diva.”

Penny did not laugh. Instead, she handed Fred a battered calculator, a half-used notebook, and the sacred motto of Mount Clearance: “Spend less, sparkle smarter.” From that day forward, Fred dedicated himself to the noble art of being frugal. He clipped coupons with great ceremony, compared prices with intense concentration, and announced every savings like a royal proclamation.

Today, Fred the Frugal Eagle soars as a reminder that growth is a process, and sometimes the first step toward being responsible is admitting you’re still a little bit extra.  His motto is simple: “A bird in the hand is worth more than two you can't afford to buy.”
