As technology in payment systems evolve, so do consumer needs and behaviors. Consumer use of electronic payment methods such as ATM and debit cards, and Automated Clearinghouse (ACH) continues to increase every year. A recent study by the Federal Reserve Board of Governors shows that in 2003, electronic payment transactions surpassed check transactions for the first time in history. Growth in debit card payments accounted for more than half the growth in electronic payments over a three-year period and increased by 7.3 billion transactions to 15.6 billion. |
